A Chalet “butterfly”

I cringe when I remember that the original purpose of these lovely pieces was an ashtray!

“Fly Away” by artist Lenny Kravitz (1998) used with permission of the copyright holder.

This 3-butt ashtray is ‘scarce’. To date, this Chalet “butterfly” has been found etched with both the “Chalet Canada” and the “Chantili’ signatures.  The blue one shown in the video above and photo below is from the collection of the Cornwall Community Museum. It is etched ‘Chalet Canada’ as well as retaining the large black and gold Chalet sticker.

Both the solid olive and the olive with the coloured base are marked with the “Chantili” etched signature. Here they are on display with other “Chantili” branded pieces at the 2010 Cornwall “The Art & Artisans of Chalet Glass” in Cornwall, Ontario.

It is a beautifully made piece with lovely proportions – typically 4” height with an 8” diameter. Nicely cased in crystal. We have found it, most often, in orange, olive and gold. The blue is the only one in that colour that I have seen. The olive with the coloured base is exceedingly rare – in contrast to Lorraine Glass Industries and EDAG, Chalet very seldom did coloured bases. I have never seen this form in a 2 tone.
